Tom Mboya rose through the trade union movement to become one of KANU's most powerful figures and a minister in Kenyatta's government. He organised the airlift of Kenyan students to American universities and was seen as pro-Western and a potential future leader. His assassination in Nairobi in July 1969 set off Luo unrest and lasting suspicion that it was politically motivated; the man convicted asked who had sent him, and the wider question was never resolved. His death deepened the Kikuyu-Luo rift in Kenyan politics.
