Suharto was an army general who took effective control of Indonesia after the failed 1965 coup, during which the military and allied groups carried out mass killings of alleged communists; estimates of the dead commonly range from about half a million to over a million, and the scale remains debated. He formally became president in 1968 and ruled for three decades under his New Order, a pro-Western, authoritarian regime that delivered growth alongside deep corruption and repression, including the invasion and occupation of East Timor. He resigned in 1998 amid the Asian financial crisis and mass protests.
