Sukarno was the central figure of Indonesian nationalism who proclaimed independence in 1945 and became the country's first president. He championed non-alignment and hosted the 1955 Bandung Conference, while moving toward a Guided Democracy that concentrated power. After a failed 1965 coup blamed on the communists, the army under Suharto oversaw mass killings of alleged communists and gradually stripped Sukarno of power. He was placed under house arrest and died in 1970.
