1947 – ? Kenyan lawyer, academic, Chief Justice of Kenya 2011-2016

Law scholar detained without trial in 1982 who later became Kenya's first chief justice under the 2010 constitution.

Willy Mutunga was a University of Nairobi law lecturer active in the left-leaning underground of the early 1980s. He was detained without trial in 1982 during the crackdown that followed the failed air force coup. After his release he became a leading human rights advocate and helped build the Kenya Human Rights Commission. In 2011 he was appointed the first Chief Justice under Kenya's 2010 constitution, serving until 2016.
