Maina wa Kinyatti was a history professor at Kenyatta University known for his radical scholarship on the Mau Mau movement. In 1982 he was arrested and convicted of possessing a seditious document linked to the underground opposition, and he spent about six years in prison. He has said he was mistreated in detention. After his release he went into exile in the United States and continued writing on Kenyan history.
