The American entrepreneur Minor Keith takes over building a railroad from the Costa Rican highlands to the coast, a project that cost thousands of workers their lives. Minor Keith's Central American holdings merge with Andrew Preston's Boston Fruit Company to form the United Fruit Company. The new firm controls plantations, railroads, ports, and shipping across the Caribbean and Central America. It quickly grew into one of the most powerful corporations in the hemisphere.

Across Central America, United Fruit builds a self-contained enclave economy: company land, company railroads, company ports, company telegraph lines, and company towns with their own stores and scrip. Locals called it El Pulpo, "the Octopus," for the reach of its tentacles. Profits flowed north while host nations gained little tax revenue and little control.

The banana trader Sam Zemurray, head of the rival Cuyamel Fruit Company, bankrolls an armed overthrow of the Honduran government to protect his concessions and tax breaks. He hired the mercenary Lee Christmas and helped install the exiled Manuel Bonilla as president. It became a textbook case of a company toppling a government for private gain.
Thousands of United Fruit workers in Colombia's banana zone strike for written contracts, an eight-hour day, and an end to payment in company scrip. The Colombian army, under pressure from the company and a US threat to intervene, opens fire on a crowd gathered in Ciénaga. The death toll is fiercely contested: the government reported dozens, while other accounts and Gabriel García Márquez's fictional retelling put it in the hundreds or thousands.

Jacobo Árbenz wins the presidency and pledges to turn Guatemala from a backward, dependent economy into a modern nation. His central goal was land reform to break the concentration of farmland in a few hands, above all the fallow estates of United Fruit. The company and the US government came to see him as a threat.
Árbenz signs Decree 900, expropriating large tracts of uncultivated land and redistributing them to landless peasants. The state offered compensation based on the low value the owners themselves had declared for tax purposes. United Fruit, which kept much of its vast holdings idle as a reserve, saw hundreds of thousands of acres targeted and called the payment far too low.

United Fruit hires Edward Bernays, the pioneer of modern public relations, to sway American opinion against Árbenz. He organized press junkets for journalists, seeded stories, and framed the land reform as a Soviet beachhead in the hemisphere. The campaign helped build the political climate in Washington for direct action.
The Eisenhower administration authorizes a covert CIA operation, code-named PBSUCCESS, to overthrow Árbenz, following an earlier aborted plan called PBFORTUNE. The plan combined a small rebel force, a fake radio station, and a campaign of psychological warfare to make the government believe an invasion was unstoppable. Historians still debate how much the plot was driven by United Fruit's interests versus broader Cold War anticommunism.
As the Guatemala plot took shape, John Foster Dulles was Secretary of State and his brother Allen Dulles was director of the CIA. Both had worked at the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell, which had long represented United Fruit. Critics point to the overlap as a clear conflict of interest; defenders argue Cold War strategy, not the company, drove the decision. Either way it became a symbol of the revolving door between corporations and the state.

A small CIA-backed force under Carlos Castillo Armas crosses into Guatemala while a propaganda campaign and air raids spread panic. The army refuses to defend the government, and Árbenz resigns and goes into exile. Castillo Armas took power, reversed the land reform, and returned the expropriated estates.
The coup ended Guatemala's democratic decade and ushered in a string of military rulers. From 1960 a civil war ground on for thirty-six years, with US-backed forces waging a scorched-earth campaign that a later truth commission judged to be genocide against Maya communities. An estimated 200,000 people were killed or disappeared, most at the hands of the state.
The financier Eli Black uses his conglomerate AMK to take over United Fruit, renaming the merged firm United Brands. Black cast himself as a reformer who wanted to improve conditions on the plantations. The company's habits of political influence, however, did not disappear.
Facing losses, United Brands paid a bribe of about 1.25 million dollars to Honduran officials, reportedly reaching President Oswaldo López Arellano, to win a cut in the banana export tax. In February 1975 Eli Black jumped to his death from his Manhattan office tower. The scandal, dubbed Bananagate, surfaced afterward through a US securities investigation and helped topple the Honduran government.
Bananagate, alongside other corporate bribery scandals of the 1970s, pushed Congress to pass the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The law made it a crime for American companies to bribe foreign officials. It marked a first attempt to rein in the corporate statecraft that firms like United Fruit had long practiced abroad.
By the late twentieth century "banana republic" had become common shorthand for a corrupt, unstable country whose politics are bent to serve narrow economic interests. A US clothing chain even took the name in 1978, stripping it of its bloody history. The phrase is now often thrown at any government seen as lawless or captured, far from its origins in the fruit trade.
The investor Carl Lindner takes control of United Brands and later renames it Chiquita Brands International, after its long-running banana label. The old United Fruit was gone in name, but its plantations, its markets, and its entanglement in Latin American politics carried on. The company remained one of the giants of the global banana trade.
The pattern the banana companies pioneered outlived them: foreign firms extracting a single commodity, walled off from the local economy, while host nations stay poor and politically fragile. Economists describe versions of this as the resource curse, where dependence on one export undermines development and invites corruption. Critics see the banana republics as an early template for later forms of neocolonial control.
Over roughly seven years, Chiquita's Colombian operation made payments totaling about 1.7 million dollars to the AUC, a right-wing paramilitary group later designated a terrorist organization by the United States. The company said it paid under threat to protect its workers, while critics saw it as funding violence in a region wracked by massacres. The payments echoed the old pattern of the fruit business entangled with armed power.
Chiquita pleads guilty in a US court to doing business with a designated terrorist group and agrees to pay a 25 million dollar fine. It was the first time a major American company had been convicted of such dealings. No executives were imprisoned, which critics said showed how lightly corporate wrongdoing abroad was punished.
A Florida jury finds Chiquita liable for financing the paramilitaries who killed relatives of the plaintiffs and orders it to pay about 38 million dollars to the victims' families. It was a rare verdict holding a US corporation accountable for violence tied to its operations abroad. Advocates called it a landmark in the long reckoning with the banana industry's record.
