Long before Aksum, a kingdom known as D'mt ruled the northern Ethiopian and Eritrean highlands, leaving inscriptions, temples, and irrigation works. Its culture blended local roots with strong links across the Red Sea to Sabaean south Arabia. Scholars still debate how much of D'mt was home-grown and how much came from Arabian settlers, since the evidence is thin.

Aksum rose as a trading power in the Horn of Africa linking Africa, Arabia, and the Mediterranean. It minted its own coins and later adopted Christianity.
King Ezana adopted Christianity in the mid-fourth century, most likely through Frumentius, a Syrian brought to the court who later became the first bishop of Aksum. This made Aksum one of the earliest states anywhere to embrace the faith, close behind Armenia and around the same time as the Roman Empire. Ezana's later coins replaced the old crescent-and-disc symbols with the cross, marking the change in the state religion.
Aksum's kings marked royal graves with towering carved granite obelisks, the largest single pieces of stone ever quarried and raised as monuments in the ancient world. The tallest that once stood reached over 30 metres before it fell and broke. One great stele looted by Italy in 1937 stood in Rome for decades and was finally returned to Ethiopia in 2005.
According to Islamic tradition, early followers of the Prophet Muhammad fleeing persecution in Mecca were given refuge by the Christian king of Aksum, remembered in Arabic sources as the Negus, or Najashi. The event, called the first hijra, is honoured in Muslim memory as a moment of protection by a just Christian ruler. It is often cited as one reason early Islam did not treat Ethiopia as a land to be conquered.
Aksum faded as a power after roughly the seventh century, losing its Red Sea trade as the rise of Islam shifted commerce and cut its ports off from old markets. Environmental strain, soil exhaustion, and the loss of coinage all played a part. The centre of the Christian kingdom drifted south into the highlands, setting the stage for later dynasties.
The Zagwe dynasty, drawn from the Agaw people, took control of the Christian highland kingdom and ruled from Lasta rather than the old Aksumite heartland. Because they did not claim descent from the biblical kings, later Solomonic writers cast them as usurpers, which colours much of the surviving record. Their most lasting achievement was a set of extraordinary churches carved from solid rock.
Under the Zagwe king Lalibela, eleven churches were cut downward out of solid volcanic rock, each carved as a single piece with windows, columns, and drainage channels. The site was meant as a new Jerusalem for Ethiopian Christians who could no longer easily reach the Holy Land. The churches remain in active use and are among the most striking works of medieval engineering anywhere.
Yekuno Amlak overthrew the last Zagwe king and founded a line that claimed direct descent from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. This so-called Solomonic dynasty would rule Ethiopia, with breaks, until 1974. The claim gave the emperors a sacred charter, tying the throne to the Bible and to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
The Kebra Nagast, or Glory of Kings, gathered the national epic into written form, telling how the Queen of Sheba visited Solomon and bore a son, Menelik I, who brought the Ark of the Covenant to Ethiopia. The book made the case that Ethiopia was the true home of the Ark and its kings the heirs of Israel. It became the founding text of Ethiopian kingship and identity, and Ethiopian tradition still holds that the Ark rests in a chapel at Aksum.
Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi, known as Gragn the left-handed, led the Muslim Sultanate of Adal in a war that overran most of the Christian highlands and destroyed many churches and manuscripts. Ethiopia survived only after Portuguese musketeers arrived to aid the emperor, while Adal drew support from the Ottomans. Gragn was killed in 1543 and his forces collapsed, but the war left the country devastated and its old records badly thinned.
After nearly a century of fragmentation known as the Era of the Princes, Kassa Hailu crowned himself Tewodros II and set out to pull the regional lords back under one throne. He tried to curb the power of the nobility and the church and to build a modern army, including a great cannon he had cast with the help of European missionaries. His reforms were harsh and often resisted, but he began the process that later emperors would complete.
After Tewodros jailed several British subjects in a dispute over a snubbed letter to Queen Victoria, Britain sent a large expedition that stormed his fortress at Magdala. Rather than be captured, Tewodros shot himself. British troops looted a vast haul of manuscripts and religious treasures, some of which Ethiopia is still trying to recover today.
Menelik II, then king of Shewa and soon emperor, established a new capital that his wife Taytu named Addis Ababa, meaning new flower. Its hot springs and central position made it a fixed seat of power after centuries of shifting royal camps. The city grew quickly into the political heart of the modern Ethiopian state.
Menelik signed a treaty of friendship with Italy at Wuchale, but the Amharic and Italian versions of Article 17 did not match. The Amharic text let Ethiopia use Italy for foreign dealings if it chose, while the Italian text made Italy the required channel, turning Ethiopia into a protectorate. When Italy insisted on its reading and other powers accepted it, Menelik renounced the treaty, and the dispute set the two countries on the road to war.

Ethiopian forces under Emperor Menelik II crushed an invading Italian army, securing Ethiopia's independence. Adwa was the first decisive defeat of a European colonial power by an African state and became a symbol for anti-colonial movements worldwide.
In the same years he fought off Italy, Menelik pushed his armies south, east, and west, roughly doubling the territory of the empire and drawing in many peoples who had not been under highland rule, including the Oromo, Sidama, and others. Supporters saw this as building the modern nation, while critics describe conquest, heavy taxation, and in places a system of servitude. Some scholars and community accounts allege very large death tolls in campaigns such as the conquest of the Arsi and the south, and these figures remain contested and politically charged today.
A palace movement deposed the young emperor Iyasu, whose leanings toward Islam and toward the Ottoman side in the First World War alarmed the church and nobility. Empress Zewditu took the throne and Ras Tafari Makonnen became regent and heir. Over the next years he steadily gathered power, brought Ethiopia into the League of Nations in 1923, and pushed cautious modernization.
On the death of Empress Zewditu, Ras Tafari was crowned emperor and took the throne name Haile Selassie, meaning Power of the Trinity. The lavish coronation drew foreign royalty and press attention. Far away in Jamaica, some read the crowning of a Black African king as the fulfilment of prophecy, and the Rastafari movement took its name from him.
A clash between Ethiopian and Italian colonial troops at the Walwal wells, deep inside Ethiopian territory, left dozens dead and gave Mussolini the pretext he wanted. Italy demanded an apology and reparations for an incident on Ethiopia's own land. Ethiopia took the dispute to the League of Nations, which dithered while Italy prepared to invade.

Mussolini's forces crossed from Eritrea into Ethiopia without a declaration of war, seeking to avenge Adwa and build an Italian empire in East Africa. The League of Nations declared Italy the aggressor and voted economic sanctions, but left out oil and did not close the Suez Canal, so the measures failed to stop the war. The invasion became a test case for whether the League could deter aggression, and it failed that test.
As Ethiopian resistance stiffened, Italy sprayed mustard gas from aircraft over troops, civilians, herds, and water sources, in breach of the Geneva Protocol it had signed. The decisive Battle of Maychew broke the emperor's main army and opened the road to the capital. The gas attacks were widely reported and condemned, yet no power moved to punish Italy for them.
In exile after the fall of Addis Ababa, Haile Selassie stood before the League of Nations in Geneva and described the gassing of his people and the failure of collective security. He warned that if the world let Ethiopia fall, the same fate would reach other small nations, a line often paraphrased as it is us today, it will be you tomorrow. The speech made him a global figure and a symbol of principle against appeasement, even as the League did nothing.

After an assassination attempt on Viceroy Rodolfo Graziani, Italian forces and Blackshirt militia carried out three days of reprisal killings against the civilian population of Addis Ababa. Estimates of the dead range from about 3,000 in early Italian accounts to 19,000 or more according to Ethiopian government estimates presented after the war, with historian Ian Campbell's more recent research supporting a toll of around 19,000-30,000. The massacre was followed by further executions of educated Ethiopians and Orthodox clergy in the following weeks.
British, Commonwealth, and Ethiopian patriot forces drove the Italians out during the East African campaign of the Second World War. Haile Selassie re-entered Addis Ababa five years to the day after he had fled, restored to his throne. The Italian occupation had lasted only about five years and was never fully secured against the patriot resistance in the countryside.
A wave of strikes, army mutinies, and protests, sharpened by a hidden famine and by soldiers' pay grievances, brought down the ageing emperor. A committee of junior officers known as the Derg deposed Haile Selassie and ended the Solomonic monarchy that traced itself back to 1270. The revolution swung the country sharply toward Marxism and military rule.
The deposed emperor died while under detention by the Derg, with the government announcing natural causes. Many believe he was killed on the orders of the new rulers, and later testimony and a court case pointed to strangulation, though the exact truth is still contested. His remains were found buried under a palace office in 1992 and reburied years later.
Somalia invaded the Somali-inhabited Ogaden region, hoping to seize it while Ethiopia was in revolutionary chaos. In a striking Cold War switch, the Soviet Union and Cuba dropped their former ally Somalia and poured arms and troops into Ethiopia, helping it repel the invasion by 1978. The war cemented the Derg as a Soviet client and reshaped alliances across the Horn of Africa.
As Mengistu Haile Mariam rose to the top of the Derg, the regime unleashed a campaign against rival leftist groups, above all the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Party. Neighbourhood squads carried out killings, torture, and mass detention, and families were sometimes made to pay for the bullets used on their dead. Estimates of those killed range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands, and the figures remain debated.
Drought combined with war and government policy to produce a famine that killed a very large number of people, with estimates commonly ranging from around 400,000 to a million dead. Television coverage of the crisis prompted the Live Aid concerts and a huge global relief effort. Researchers such as Alex de Waal argue that the Derg's counter-insurgency, forced resettlement, and use of aid as a weapon made the disaster far worse than drought alone, a point the government long denied.
A coalition of rebel armies led by Tigrayan fighters, the EPRDF, captured the capital as Mengistu fled into exile in Zimbabwe. At the same time Eritrean forces secured full control of Eritrea, ending Africa's longest war of the era. The victory ended seventeen years of Derg rule and brought Meles Zenawi to power at the head of a new ethnic-federal state.
After a thirty-year armed struggle, Eritreans voted overwhelmingly for independence in a UN-monitored referendum, and Eritrea became a separate state. The split left Ethiopia landlocked, cut off from the Red Sea ports it had held. Relations between the two governments were friendly at first but soon soured over borders and trade.
A dispute over the small town of Badme flared into a full war between the former allies, fought with trench lines and heavy artillery in a style recalling the First World War. Estimates of the dead on both sides run to roughly 70,000 to 100,000 over two years. A 2000 peace deal and boundary ruling largely favoured Eritrea, but Ethiopia refused to hand over Badme, leaving the two states locked in a frozen standoff for years.
Abiy Ahmed became prime minister amid mass protests and moved fast to free prisoners, welcome exiles, ease media controls, and make peace with Eritrea, ending the twenty-year standoff. The peace deal won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019. The opening also loosened old controls and stirred ethnic tensions that would soon boil over, and critics later argued the early promise gave way to renewed repression.
