The Northern Frontier District dispute with Kenya
also in Somaliland and Somalia: partition, collapse, and an unrecognized state
As Kenya moved to independence, an official commission found that most people in the Somali-inhabited Northern Frontier District wanted to join Somalia. Britain kept the district within Kenya, and Somalia backed a secessionist revolt known as the Shifta War. Kenya's counter-insurgency and the failed bid left the NFD, later Kenya's North Eastern region, a lasting grievance on the Somali margins.
