The Cheka is founded
Weeks after the Bolshevik seizure of power, Lenin's government created the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission, known as the Cheka, under Felix Dzerzhinsky. It was tasked with fighting counter-revolution and sabotage, and quickly became the instrument of the Red Terror, carrying out arrests and executions without trial. The Cheka established the template for a political police answering to the party rather than the courts. Every later Soviet and Russian security service traces its lineage to it.
