The Kimberley diamond fields and De Beers
Diamonds found at Kimberley draw a rush of prospectors and turn a stretch of the arid interior into one of the richest mining districts on earth. Cecil Rhodes and Barney Barnato consolidate the claims, and in 1888 Rhodes forms De Beers Consolidated Mines, which comes to control almost the entire world diamond supply. The wealth and the political ambitions it funds shape everything that follows in southern Africa.
