    In the Mbwaa story the Ngaa, ancestors of the Meru, are held under a people called the Nguo Ntune, the "red clothes" or red people, who impose a series of absurd, impossible tasks. A diviner cuts open a volunteer warrior named Aita, examines and heals him, and the reborn Aita strikes a great water so it parts, letting the fugitives cross on dry land before they disperse into the Tigania, Igembe, Imenti, Mwimbi, and Tharaka. Anne-Marie Peatrik records nine variants gathered between 1910 and the 1990s.

Each gaaru held the drums and long horns, and the polity worked as an "ecumene" in which the horns of neighbouring houses answered one another across the land.

She also argues the age-set dating confuses the history of an institution with the history of settlement, so the migration reading collapses.
