Gikuyu and Mumbi and the nine clans legendary
In Kikuyu tradition the creator Ngai set the first man, Gikuyu, on Mount Kenya and gave him a wife, Mumbi. The couple had nine daughters, and their households became the nine (often counted as ten) clans that make up the Agikuyu. The story is told as a charter for the whole people, tracing every lineage back to the founding sisters at Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga.
