  1. Jethro Tull develops the seed drill

    Jethro Tull introduced a horse-drawn seed drill that sowed seeds in neat rows at a controlled depth. It reduced waste and raised crop yields, a step in the wider agricultural improvement that fed a growing population.

  2. Arkwright opens Cromford Mill

    Richard Arkwright built a water-powered cotton mill at Cromford, often called the first modern factory. It gathered machines and workers under one roof on shift work, a model widely copied.

    Towns grew up around cotton and other mills, with rows of workers' housing near the works. Places like Manchester and Oldham became dense centers of industrial employment.

  4. Slater builds the first American cotton mill

    Samuel Slater, who had learned British methods, built a water-powered spinning mill in Rhode Island from memory. His mill brought factory-based textile production to the United States.

  5. The Peterloo Massacre

    Cavalry charged a large peaceful crowd calling for political reform at St Peter's Field, killing and injuring many. The event became a symbol of the demand for the vote and workers' rights.

  6. The Lowell mills open in Massachusetts

    Investors built large integrated cotton mills at Lowell that combined spinning and weaving under one roof. They employed young women workers and became a model of American industry.

  7. Gramme builds a practical dynamo

    Zenobe Gramme built a dynamo that produced a steady electric current for industrial use. Reliable generators made large-scale electric power possible.

  8. Bell patents the telephone

    Alexander Graham Bell patented a device that sent speech over a wire as an electric signal. The telephone soon connected homes and businesses and changed communication.

  9. Benz builds the first petrol motor car

    Karl Benz built a three-wheeled vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine and patented it in 1886. It is widely regarded as the first practical automobile.

  10. Russia builds the Trans-Siberian Railway

    Russia built a railway across Siberia to link its vast territory and open the east. The line was part of a late, state-led drive to industrialize under finance minister Sergei Witte.

  11. Ford introduces the Model T

    Henry Ford launched the Model T, a sturdy, affordable car meant for ordinary buyers. Strong demand pushed Ford to find faster ways to build it.

  12. Haber synthesizes ammonia from nitrogen

    Fritz Haber showed how to make ammonia from atmospheric nitrogen and hydrogen under high pressure. The reaction opened the way to cheap synthetic fertilizer and explosives.

  13. Bosch scales up ammonia production at Oppau

    Carl Bosch turned Haber's laboratory reaction into a full industrial process at a BASF plant. The Haber-Bosch process made fertilizer on a scale that fed a growing world population.

  14. Ford starts the moving assembly line

    Ford installed a moving assembly line at Highland Park that carried cars past stationary workers. It cut the time to build a Model T from hours to minutes and made mass production the industrial standard.
