The military and intelligence roots of everyday tech: DARPA, born after Sputnik, seeding the ARPANET and internet, GPS, the mouse, stealth, drones, and Siri; the Cold War spending that built Silicon Valley; and the spooks and startups, In-Q-Tel, Keyhole becoming Google Earth, and Palantir.
Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, students of Stanford's Frederick Terman, started HP in a garage that is now treated as the birthplace of Silicon Valley. Wartime and Cold War military contracts for electronics gave the young company its first steady business.
