Daniel arap Moi succeeds Kenyatta as president

Jomo Kenyatta died in office on 22 August 1978, and his vice president Daniel arap Moi took over, first as acting president and then formally in October. Moi kept Kenya on its capitalist, pro-Western path and its close ties to London and Washington. He would hold power for 24 years.
