San hunter-gatherers produced thousands of rock engravings and paintings at Twyfelfontein in the Kunene region, a tradition spanning several thousand years. The San are the oldest known inhabitants of the region now called Namibia. The site remains one of the largest concentrations of rock art in Africa.
Ovambo-speaking peoples established a cluster of small kingdoms, including Ondonga and Uukwambi, in the well-watered floodplain region of northern Namibia known as Owambo. These kingdoms combined farming, cattle-keeping, and iron-working, and remained the most densely populated part of the territory into the colonial period. They stayed largely outside direct German control during the colonial era.
Bantu-speaking Herero pastoralists migrated south into what is now central Namibia, bringing large cattle herds and settling the plateau grazing lands. They came into regular contact and competition with Khoikhoi and Nama groups already living in the area. Cattle wealth became the basis of Herero social and political organization.
Nama groups of mixed Khoikhoi and Cape Dutch descent, known as Oorlam, moved north across the Orange River into Namibia bringing horses and firearms acquired from Cape Colony trade networks. Their military advantage let them dominate other Nama and Damara groups and clash with the expanding Herero. Leaders such as Jonker Afrikaner became powerful regional rulers.
Oorlam Nama leader Jonker Afrikaner settled at the warm springs known as Aigams and built it into his capital, renaming it Windhoek. From there he extended Oorlam Nama control over much of central Namibia and fought repeated wars with Herero groups over cattle and grazing land. Windhoek later became the capital of German South-West Africa and remains Namibia's capital today.
German Rhenish missionaries founded mission stations among Nama and Herero communities, including at Otjimbingwe and Windhoek, introducing literacy, Christianity, and European trade goods. The missions became entry points for later German commercial and political interest in the territory. Missionary reports and letters are a major documentary source for this period.
Britain formally annexed the natural deep-water port of Walvis Bay and the surrounding enclave, later administering it as part of the Cape Colony. The enclave remained under British and then South African control even after Germany claimed the surrounding coastline, creating a separate legal status that lasted until 1994. It gave Britain, and later South Africa, a foothold independent of German rule.
German merchant Adolf Lüderitz purchased coastal land and mineral rights from a Nama chief at Angra Pequena on the southern Namibian coast, using an agent to secure a bay and a wide surrounding strip of territory. The deal, negotiated with unfamiliar English mile measurements, gave Lüderitz far more land than the local ruler understood he was granting. It became the foothold for German colonial claims in the region.
The German government placed Lüderitz's coastal holdings under official protection, formally launching German South-West Africa as a colony. This was Germany's first African colonial claim under Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. German traders, settlers, and troops steadily expanded inland from this coastal base over the following two decades.
European powers met in Berlin to set rules for colonial claims in Africa, and the conference confirmed Germany's protectorate over South-West Africa alongside its other African claims. No African representatives took part in the negotiations, which ran until February 1885. The conference formalized the wider Scramble for Africa that shaped Namibia's borders and colonial status.
Germany and Britain signed a treaty exchanging colonial territories that, among other provisions, attached a narrow strip of land in the northeast to German South-West Africa to give the colony access toward the Zambezi River. This became known as the Caprivi Strip. The treaty fixed the colony's borders largely as Namibia's borders remain today.
Under governor Theodor Leutwein, German colonial forces built a network of forts and treaties to extend control from the coast into Herero and Nama territory. Settler ranching expanded, increasingly displacing African herders from grazing land and water sources. Land alienation and mounting settler debt disputes fed growing resentment among Herero communities.
Herero fighters led by paramount chief Samuel Maherero attacked German settlers and military posts, protesting land seizure, cattle confiscation, and settler abuses. The uprising killed around 120 German settlers in its opening days, while sparing women, children, and non-German foreigners under Maherero's instructions. Germany responded by sending large reinforcements under General Lothar von Trotha.

German forces under General Lothar von Trotha encircled Herero fighters and civilians at the Waterberg, deliberately leaving one route open toward the waterless Omaheke desert. Tens of thousands of Herero, including noncombatants, fled into the desert, where German patrols were ordered to seal off waterholes. Most of those who fled died of thirst and starvation in the following weeks.
Nama leader Hendrik Witbooi, who had earlier signed a protection treaty with Germany, broke with the colonial administration and took up arms alongside other Nama groups. Nama fighters waged an effective guerrilla campaign against German forces for over a year. Germany's response again included mass internment and killing of captured fighters and civilians.
General Lothar von Trotha issued a written proclamation, the Vernichtungsbefehl, declaring that every Herero found within German territory, armed or unarmed, with or without cattle, would be shot, and that the Herero people must leave the land or be destroyed. Waterholes were poisoned or guarded to block any return from the desert. The order is widely cited by historians as the first documented genocide of the twentieth century.
Under pressure from German colonial officials and church leaders, Emperor Wilhelm II rescinded von Trotha's extermination order. In its place, German authorities established a policy of mass internment, forcing surviving Herero and later Nama prisoners into concentration camps. Conditions in the camps proved to be nearly as lethal as the preceding campaign of extermination.
German authorities interned thousands of Herero and Nama prisoners, most of them women, children, and the elderly, on a small exposed peninsula at Lüderitz with minimal shelter, food, and clothing. Forced labor, starvation, disease, and exposure killed a majority of those held there, giving the camp a mortality rate among the worst of any camp in the colony. Survivors and later historians have called Shark Island one of the earliest death camps of the modern era.

Nama leader Hendrik Witbooi died from wounds received while leading an attack on a German supply convoy. His death was a severe blow to organized Nama resistance, though scattered fighting continued for several more years. Witbooi is remembered in Namibia as a national hero of the anti-colonial resistance.
German colonial authorities issued ordinances stripping surviving Herero and Nama communities of remaining land rights and requiring Africans over the age of seven to carry identification passes. The measures barred African land and cattle ownership on the scale that had existed before the war and pushed survivors into wage labor on settler farms and mines. These laws formed the legal basis for decades of racial land dispossession in the territory.
German authorities closed the concentration camp system after several years of internment. The Herero population is estimated to have fallen by roughly 80 percent and the Nama population by roughly 50 percent as a result of the war, flight, and internment since 1904. Survivors lost most of their cattle and land and were subjected afterward to pass laws restricting movement and land ownership.
German anthropologist Eugen Fischer traveled to the colony to study people of mixed Nama and European descent known as Basters, developing racial theories about the effects of interbreeding between Europeans and Africans. His resulting book, published in 1913, argued for restricting the rights and reproduction of mixed-race populations. Fischer's work was later cited approvingly by Nazi race scientists, and he went on to head Nazi Germany's leading eugenics institute and to help draft the Nuremberg racial laws.
As part of the First World War, forces of the Union of South Africa invaded German South-West Africa on behalf of the British Empire, opening a new front against the small German colonial garrison. The campaign combined South African army units with local volunteer forces and moved on multiple fronts from the south and coast. German forces retreated steadily northward over the following months.
The remaining German colonial garrison surrendered unconditionally to South African forces under General Louis Botha, ending German rule over the territory. South Africa administered the territory under martial law in the immediate aftermath. German colonial administration in South-West Africa never resumed after the war.
The League of Nations formally assigned South-West Africa to the Union of South Africa as a Class C mandate, the category applied to territories to be administered essentially as an integral part of the mandatory power. South Africa took this to mean near-total control with only limited League oversight. The mandate arrangement became the legal basis for decades of South African rule that outlasted the League itself.
South African administrator Jan Christiaan Smuts' government imposed a heavy dog tax on the Bondelswarts Nama community, provoking an armed protest that South African authorities crushed using aircraft to bomb and strafe Nama encampments. More than 100 Nama people were killed in the operation. The League of Nations criticized the disproportionate use of force but took no further action.
The Baster community of Rehoboth resisted South African efforts to override their traditional self-governing council and impose direct administrative control. South African police and armed forces moved in to suppress the protest and formally curtailed Baster self-rule. The episode was another instance of South Africa overriding local governance structures inherited from the German period.
South Africa began applying its Nationalist government's apartheid legislation to South-West Africa, including racial classification, land segregation, and pass laws, and gave the territory limited representation in the South African parliament. This tightened Pretoria's direct control over the territory beyond what the League of Nations mandate had envisioned. The move drew growing international criticism as decolonization accelerated elsewhere in Africa.
A South African government commission chaired by F.H. Odendaal recommended dividing South-West Africa into separate ethnic homelands, or bantustans, modeled on South Africa's own apartheid homeland system. The plan formally extended South Africa's racial segregation policy to the territory's land and political administration. Implementation displaced many Africans and hardened international opposition to South African rule.
The South West Africa People's Organisation, founded in 1960, fired the opening shots of its armed struggle against South African rule at a guerrilla training camp at Omugulugwombashe. This clash marked the start of a low-intensity war that continued for more than two decades, fought largely in the northern border regions and spilling into Angola. Namibians now mark the date as Heroes' Day.
The United Nations General Assembly voted to terminate South Africa's mandate over South-West Africa, ruling that Pretoria had failed its obligations and placing the territory under direct UN responsibility. South Africa refused to recognize the ruling and continued to administer the territory as before. The International Court of Justice later upheld the UN position in a 1971 advisory opinion.
The UN Security Council demanded that South Africa withdraw from Namibia and hold free elections under UN supervision, formally naming the territory Namibia rather than South-West Africa. The resolution set the framework that later negotiations built on. South Africa did not comply for more than a decade.
The Security Council approved a settlement plan for Namibian independence, including a ceasefire, withdrawal of South African forces, and UN-supervised elections. Implementation stalled for a decade over South African conditions linking withdrawal to the removal of Cuban troops from Angola. The plan eventually became the basis for the actual transition to independence a decade later.
South African forces, allied Angolan rebel movement UNITA, and Cuban and Angolan government forces fought an extended battle in southern Angola, part of the wider Border War tied to Namibia's occupation and the Angolan civil war. The battle ended in a costly stalemate that pushed all sides toward negotiation. It is widely seen as a turning point that made South Africa more willing to accept Namibian independence.
South Africa, Angola, and Cuba signed agreements committing to Cuban troop withdrawal from Angola and South African withdrawal from Namibia under UN supervision, clearing the way to implement Resolution 435. The accords resulted from months of negotiation mediated by the United States. They set a firm timetable for Namibia's transition to independence.
The UN Transition Assistance Group supervised Namibia's first democratic elections for a Constituent Assembly, with SWAPO winning a plurality of seats but falling short of the two-thirds majority needed to write the constitution unilaterally. The election followed a ceasefire and the phased withdrawal of South African forces earlier in the year. The resulting assembly negotiated a constitution by consensus among the parties.
Namibia formally became an independent state, with Sam Nujoma of SWAPO sworn in as its first president in a ceremony attended by UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar and Nelson Mandela, recently released from prison. The new constitution included a bill of rights and a multiparty democratic system. Namibia's independence marked the end of the last colonial-style administration on mainland Africa.
