Caral and the Norte Chico civilization
In the coastal valleys north of present-day Lima, the Norte Chico or Caral-Supe society builds monumental platform mounds and sunken plazas. It is one of the oldest known civilizations anywhere and the oldest in the Americas, and it appears to have grown without pottery or clear signs of warfare, trading cotton and fish. Dates rest on radiocarbon work at Caral and remain approximate.
