   Mary Leakey and W.E. Owen first described the dimple-based pottery of Central Kavirondo in 1948, later known as Urewe ware after a site near Lake Victoria. Radiocarbon dates place it from roughly 500 BCE, made by some of the region's first ironworking farmers. Archaeologists often read its spread as a track of early Bantu-speaking settlement. The pottery and its dates are firm, but equating a pot style with a whole people is a step many treat with caution.

   The earliest Luo group to reach the Kenyan side of Lake Victoria is remembered as the Joka-Jok, the people of Jok, who moved down through the Acholi and Uganda country and settled around Got Ramogi. Oral tradition and linguistic reconstruction place this first wave in roughly the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries. From this bridgehead the Luo spread out across the Nyanza lakeshore.

   The Luo, a River-Lake Nilotic people, moved south from the Nile valley in stages and settled the country around the eastern shore of Lake Victoria, mixing farming, herding, and fishing.    As the Luo settled the Winam Gulf they built a mixed life of cattle keeping, sorghum farming, and heavy reliance on the lake for fishing. Their spread displaced some of the Bantu communities already living there and absorbed others through marriage, clientship, and language shift. The southern Luo groups took on Bantu neighbors' crops and words even as they imposed their own tongue.

   Unlike their River-Lake kin the Shilluk, whose reth was a sacred king, or the Alur with their rain-making chiefs, the Kenyan Luo never built a single centralized kingship. Power stayed spread across many lineages and their ruodhi, held in check by elders and clan balance. Scholars still debate why the southern branch stayed decentralized while northern branches grew divine kings, which keeps this reconstruction contested.

   On the islands and shore the Suba built a life around fishing, canoe travel and trade across the lake.    The colonial administration imposed a hut tax across the East Africa Protectorate, later joined by a poll tax on adult men. The taxes had to be paid in cash, which most families could only get through wage work on settler farms and in the towns. The effect, and often the intent, was to push men in Nyanza and the western districts out to labour.

   The Uganda Railway reached the shore of Lake Victoria at the port first named Port Florence, now Kisumu, completing the main line from the coast. The railway had cost about GBP 5.5 million and many lives, and to make it pay Britain now pressed to fill the highlands with cash-crop farming and export freight. That pressure drove the settler project and the seizure of African land.

   The densely populated Luo, Luhya, and Gusii districts of Nyanza and western Kenya became the main source of workers for settler farms, the Mombasa port, the railway, and the growing towns. Men left home for months to work far away and returned to reserves that stayed poor. The region supplied hands rather than keeping the value of their work.

    The Mumbo cult, traced in oral tradition to a Luo man named Onyango Dunde who said a serpent deity rose from Lake Victoria and spoke to him, promised that Europeans and their religion would vanish. It rejected Christianity, taxes, and colonial authority and spread among Luo and Gusii communities. The colonial government treated it as subversive and moved repeatedly to suppress it.

    Mission-educated Luo and Luhya founded the Young Kavirondo Association to protest rising taxes, the kipande, forced labour, and the loss of land, holding a mass meeting the Luo remembered as Piny Owacho, the voice of the people. Alarmed officials steered the movement, with the help of the missionary Archdeacon Owen, into a tamer welfare body. Even so it marked one of the earliest organised African protests in the colony and seeded later western politics.

    Bethwell Allan Ogot's History of the Southern Luo gathered migration stories, genealogies, and clan traditions into a documented account of settlement from about 1500.     Tom Mboya, the Luo trade unionist and Minister for Economic Planning and Development, was shot dead outside a pharmacy on Government Road in central Nairobi. At 38 he was one of the most capable figures in government and was widely seen as a possible future president. His death removed the leading Luo voice at the centre of national politics.

    In the days after the Kisumu shootings the government banned the Kenya People's Union, the main opposition party, and detained Oginga Odinga and other leaders without trial. Kenya was left effectively a one-party state under KANU. The move closed off the main legal outlet for dissent and deepened the sense that the centre would not tolerate rivals.

    President Jomo Kenyatta travelled to Kisumu to open the new Nyanza Provincial General Hospital, months after Mboya's death and amid open anger in the region. A hostile crowd jeered him and voiced support for Odinga's opposition party, and his guards and police then opened fire. Official figures put the dead at 11, while other accounts run to around 100, some killed far from the scene.

    Foreign Minister Robert Ouko disappeared from his rural home and was found dead days later near Got Alila hill, shot and his body burned. A respected figure seen as a possible reformer, his killing shocked the country and drew British investigators.
