Pio Gama Pinto shot dead in Nairobi

Pio Gama Pinto, a Goa-born socialist, journalist and anti-colonial organizer, was shot at close range in the driveway of his Nairobi home while his young daughter sat in the car. He was the first politician killed in independent Kenya. Pinto had built the intellectual and financial base of the parliamentary left and worked closely with Vice-President Oginga Odinga's faction.
